Contrasting Viewpoints

“I’m a practicing Zen Buddhist and I’m influenced by my readings in that tradition, such as the notion that everyone is born a perfect being and we spend most of our lives with a clouded vision trying to realize our perfection.”  ~ Reif Larsen, author of The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet (from an interview on the Pima County Public Library website)

“As it is written, there is none righteous, not even one. There is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God. All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, not even one.”  ~ Romans 3:10-12

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned (when Adam sinned)… ~ Romans 3:12

“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy (menstrual) rag.”  Isaiah 64:6

“The heart (of man) is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9

“Surely every man at his best is a mere breath.” ~ Psalm 395

As proud human beings, the fact that we are all sinners and can do nothing to help ourselves out of it is extremely hard to accept. And yet, when we do, it’s so freeing. How can we express that to others? It seems to make no sense while it makes all the sense in the world!
